CLARIFICATION ON LAND OWNERSHIP AND MINERAL RIGHTS IN FIJI
May 18, 2026The Mataqali Waisali of Waisali Village, Wailevu, Cakaudrove, has successfully utilized part of their lease funds invested with the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB). A total of $190,152.74 was released to the Mataqali Waisali to support key development projects that strengthen infrastructure, transportation, and long-term economic opportunities for the mataqali.
Project 1 – Village Hall Construction
The Mataqali Village Hall has been completed at an estimated cost of $70,000.00. Most of the timber used was harvested from the Mataqali’s own hardwood resources, significantly reducing costs and ensuring the project’s success. The hall now serves as a central hub for community gatherings and events.
Project 2 – Purchase of Twin Cab Vehicle
A twin cab vehicle was purchased for $44,000.00 to meet daily community needs. It is currently used to transport school children to nearby schools each morning and afternoon, while also supporting general transportation and village activities.
Project 3 – Excavator Purchase Assistance
Through the Ministry of Agriculture, the Mataqali have also secured an excavator valued at $108,888.00. The Mataqali contributed one-third of the cost ($36,296.00) to Vision Motors, with the remaining two-thirds funded by the Government. This machinery will play a vital role in land development, road access, drainage works, farming, and broader community initiatives.
Mataqali representative Mr. Inoke Bolakania expressed gratitude to TLTB for its support, noting that the released funds have greatly advanced the Mataqali’s development aspirations.
“The next phase will include extending the Village Hall with toilets and washroom facilities. Once the excavator arrives, we will also begin farming development projects to expand agricultural activities, improve land preparation, and create sustainable income opportunities for our people,” he said.
The Mataqali owns the Waisali Rainforest Reserves now being leased and managed by the National Trust of Fiji and the local community.
