January 22, 2026The President of Fiji – Na Turaga na Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, led the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Vuda Peace Park at the historic Lomolomo Gunsite in Lautoka.
The event was attended by the Tui Vuda, Ratu Eparama Tavaiqia, cabinet ministers, military officers, ex-servicemen, landowners and other invited guests. The event was also attended by the Minister for iTaukei Affairs and TLTB Chairman Hon. Ifereimi Vasu and CEO Mr Solomone Nata.
Ratu Naiqama said the Lomolomo Gunsite is an important part of Fiji’s history.
He said that building the Vuda Peace Park shows Fiji’s respect for those who served to protect not only Vuda but Fiji as well and its commitment to preserving heritage sites for future generations.
The Lomolomo Gunsite was built during World War II as part of Fiji’s coastal defense system overlooking the Nadi Bay with Denarau Island from the other side of the harbour.
The new Vuda Peace Park will cover 12 acres and include:
– Military museum with modern facilities
– Homes for veterans
– Veterans’ hospital
– Indoor sports centre
– – World War II chapel
– Monuments to national heroes, including the late Sukanaivalu
– Duke of Edinburgh military museum
– Regional cultural and convention center
– Hotel to boost tourism and local economy
Project Director Epeli Naivalu said the park will be more than a memorial. It will be a living heritage site where future generations can learn about Fiji’s military history and its role in promoting peace in the region and the world.
The Vuda Peace Park is expected to become a major national landmark, encouraging remembrance, education, and community involvement, while also supporting heritage protection and economic growth in the Western Division.
