January 30, 2024In a landmark development, the Methodist Church in Fiji (MCIF) and the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) officially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last week, signifying a momentous milestone.
The primary objective of this MOU is to establish a common ground for sharing vital information concerning all iTaukei land historically gifted by various landowning units across Fiji to the MCIF. The accord marks a historic understanding between the two organizations, setting the stage for collaborative efforts in land management and fostering mutual respect for the sacred gifts bestowed by landowners on the MCIF.
Mr Solomoni Nata, Interim CEO of TLTB, acknowledged the significance of the agreement, emphasizing that while the land cannot be alienated, this collaboration is an important starting point towards addressing issues related to land boundaries of the MCIF.
Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou, the President of MCIF, expressed his gratitude for the sacred land parcels bestowed upon the church, emphasizing that these gifts were given with a deep mutual understanding and the belief that blessings would be conferred upon the landowners. He reiterated that these lands are sacred gifts, and treated as such by the church.
This historic agreement reflects a shared commitment to the well-being of the iTaukei community, promoting a harmonious coexistence between the largest Christian denomination in the country, and the custodians of Fiji’s native land.
