The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) this week handed over a Yamaha Outboard Engine valued at $7,728 to Turaga Na Tui Naviti and Taukei Nailesu, Ratu Kitone Vuluma, reinforcing TLTB’s commitment to empowering landowners through the responsible use of lease income entitlements.
The assistance was approved through Ratu Kitone’s advance lease funds request in his capacity as Turaga iTaukei, Turaga ni Yavusa, and Turaga ni Mataqali within the District of Naviti. The outboard engine will support his ongoing livelihood and business activities while improving transportation and mobility within the island community.
Speaking during the handover, CEO Mr. Solomone Nata commended Ratu Kitone for his exemplary commitment to financial responsibility and accountability.
Mr. Nata highlighted that Ratu Kitone had previously benefited from a Boat and Outboard Engine package valued at more than $26,000 under the Taukei Development Fund Facility (TDFF) initiative and successfully repaid the loan in full through his lease income entitlements.
“Ratu Kitone has demonstrated that traditional leadership goes hand in hand with integrity, accountability, and sound financial management. His successful repayment record sets a positive example for other landowners and traditional leaders who aspire to invest in productive assets for the benefit of their families and communities,” said Mr. Nata.
Mr Nata noted that responsible investment of lease income is one of the key pathways through which landowners can create sustainable economic opportunities while maintaining their traditional obligations and leadership roles.
For Ratu Kitone, the outboard engine represents more than just a transportation asset. It is an investment that will strengthen his business operations, improve access and connectivity around the Naviti area, and create opportunities for future income generation. The asset will also assist him in carrying out community and customary responsibilities more effectively.
The handover reflects TLTB’s broader vision of encouraging landowners to utilize their lease income strategically to build sustainable livelihoods and long-term economic resilience.
