The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has reinforced its commitment to empowering landowning units through sustainable economic development with the handover of a new tractor to Mataqali Bua of Yavusa Senibua, in Nawaka.
The brand new tractor was procured through Mataqali Bua’s lease funds which were accumulated following the deactivation of an account previously held under a former minor beneficiary. In accordance with Trust policy, the accumulated lease monies were returned to the mataqali for the benefit of its members and to support productive mataqali investments.
The mataqali subsequently sought approval to utilize part of the funds to purchase a tractor to advance agricultural activities undertaken by its members. The proposal received the necessary consent from members and was endorsed as a strategic investment aimed at creating long-term economic opportunities and improving livelihoods.
A total of $529,281.31 was reverted to Mataqali Bua, with $63,500 approved for the purchase of the tractor.
TLTB Chief Executive Officer, Mr Solomone Nata, said the initiative reflects the importance of investing lease income into projects that deliver tangible benefits for landowners and future generations.
“This handover demonstrates how lease revenues can be strategically reinvested into productive assets that support economic growth, strengthen community resilience and create sustainable income opportunities for mataqali members,” he said.
In His Address, Na Momo Na Tui Nawaka, Ratu Joeli Derenalagi, (Taukei Nalagi), and Board Member of TLTB, commended Mataqali Bua for investing its lease funds into a productive asset that will benefit both the current and future generations.
Ratu Joeli said the initiative reflects TLTB’s renewed focus on encouraging landowners to utilize lease income for sustainable business ventures and investments that create long-term value.
“The Board’s direction is to support landowners in growing their wealth through productive investments. By using lease funds to develop assets and businesses, mataqali can create additional income streams and build a stronger future for their children and grandchildren,” he said.
The new tractor is expected to improve land preparation and farming efficiency, increase agricultural productivity, and support the expansion of farming activities within the community. It will also reduce costs associated with hiring machinery, allowing members to maximize returns from their agricultural ventures.
The initiative reflects TLTB’s vision of creating economically empowered landowners and sustainable communities, where lease revenues are not only distributed as income but are strategically invested to grow wealth, strengthen livelihoods and secure lasting benefits for future generations of iTaukei landowners.
